That’s okay.”

oh, wow .. I found those words so validating! I felt ‘felt’ and understood, and not so freakishly alone!

Thank you for sharing x

An excellent example of how there’s strength in vulnerability and beauty within raw expression. it’s always refreshing to read heartfelt and honest recounts. I’ve never experienced depression but many of my friends have. As you said, it can be tempting to move past the discomfort by offering a quick ‘solution’ or bandaid compliment but it undermines the underlying issues. It’s comforting to know that just listening and trying to understand, while offering to be there is enough for now. Would love to read more of these insightful and personal posts! xx

I have many friends who have struggled or are struggling with mental health issues and this just gave me a whole new perspective on how to be there for them since saying cliches obviously doesn’t help them.

So many people try to come up with a solution or give their two cents for a situation when all we really need is for them to listen to us. Just be there and listen. Empathise and not criticise.

Depression doesn’t work in a way that it can be “fixed,” you often have to work through it and find a way out rather than just try to snap your fingers and cheer up. Our minds are complicated twisted things that keep us busy without even trying. I hope your fall is better Jackie – stay strong <3

I guess, because that’s the kind of person I am too. There seem to be too flavors in the world – the fixers (like me and a lot of us, I think) and the be’ers. The ones who sit down with you and feel your pain with you. Those seem to be the people a lot of us want to listen to us when we’re struggling – because they do that empathy thing so darn well!

Awesome for them. Secret time? They make me crazy uncomfortable. I’m an INTP – I don’t like being “in my feelings” y’know what I’m saying. I want to solve the problem. Or at least have some solutions for my analytical brain to ruminate on for a while. But that’s just me.

And I totally understand that other people probably don’t want that kind of response. So instead, I try to just listen and then afterwards, ask them what they need at that moment. If it’s not a “fix” – I don’t offer it.

Emotional Intelligence for the win! Thanks for sharing your insight, it’s good reminder for peeps like me.

I relate to this SO MUCH right now. I recently had a really bad experience with a diet plan that I quit and since then, I have just decided to NOT do or engage in ANYTHING related to diet. It is the best thing for my mental and physical health right now, which I found out the hard way. Has that stopped people around me (thankfully not my power trifecta of mom-dad-husband because they understand me) from offering up other diet plans or guest passes to their gym or WHATEVER that I don’t want to engage with at this time (possibly ever)? NOPE! It’s like they didn’t even absorb the message about this stuff not being good for me right now. Nah, I just haven’t tried THEIR THING, that’s all, that will fix me. So annoying. Thank you for this article, which is terrific and timely.
