First of all – Congratulations on your new purchase. You did well! This house is beaming with so much potential! I agree with you completely- go slow. Take your time getting to know this house, understand what it really needs. The longer you are in it, the more you get it.

Personally, I would start with determining the “theme/direction” and go from there. You have some elements of mcm, traditional, contemporary, rustic – too many styles cramped in one home. Next, I would paint and figure out the floors and light fixtures. If it’s in the budget, attack the windows/ doors & hardware too. I would save the kitchen for last. Just like in your last home, you might find yourself thinking of something different as the time goes by.

Thank you for your input, Malorie! I definitely hear where you’re coming from and we have no intention of replacing all of the features that make this home so unique. We don’t know what issues wait for us as we start living there, but we do know that there are certain parts that have been built really well and other parts that haven’t been, so we’ll need to assess those things once we make the move.

We definitely didn’t buy this home to turn it inside out and we plan to keep the integrity of the house, but there are rooms where we’ll likely need to make some updates. I really appreciate you bringing this to our attention and it’s definitely something we’ll be thinking about as we move through the process. The electrical looks really good on the whole but there are still some unknowns, and we may have to do some electrical and plumbing work once we get settled and assess what needs to be updated in the home. Time will tell, but yes, there may be some electrical and plumbing updates in our future!
