Hi! Thank you so much for this. I’ve never heard that about resilient adults but my goodness, that rings true. I, too, wish that difficult parent-child dynamics were talked about more. It’s taboo, but why?! Because it makes people uncomfortable? All the more reason to share these stories more. I’m so glad you’ve got your perennials by your side — you deserve them all.

Through the past three years of therapy I’ve realized that I don’t need to have her in my life in the way that society and Instagram posts tell us to. My relationship with my dad is equally strained, if somewhat less toxic. I read a couple of years ago that resilient adults from fractured pasts like ours often have a strong community around them. This makes me even more thankful for the perennials. They’re the parents and teachers that we needed to fill our gaps, and us, theirs. Thank you so much for sharing. I wish that difficult parent-child relationships were more openly discussed.

THIS IS WHY I WRITE! It’s so affirming to know that another fatherless wanderer benefitted from reading this. Thank you so much for the note!
