Thank you for writing this!! This happened to me, too, and luckily I had a friend who’d been through it and told me, so I talked to her about it. Then a year or so later, it happened to my sister, and I was so glad I’d told her about mine so I could soothe her fears. I love to talk about women’s bodies!! We are incredible!

It means so much to me to hear everyone else's story - because a lot of women go through this and it makes us all feel a little less alone. The importance of the HPV vaccine started shaking things up when I was a sophomore in college. I wish I would have known about the importance of the treatment long before that. Appreciate your knowledge!

I got high-risk HPV from my ex-husband who was unfaithful to me (thanks a bunch). Just had my first colposcopy a few weeks ago but my first abnormal pap smear sent me in a downward spiral of anxiety and panic attacks that lasted a good 6 months.

Thank you for talking about this! I had nobody to talk to who understood what I was going through. During my colposcopy, my ob/gyn found some concerning cells and had them biopsied, but they came back low-grade. He said 70% of cases like mine heal themselves. It’s basically just a waiting game until I get my next pap smear in one year. It’s frustrating to have something that you know is living in your body, possibly growing, possibly shrinking, but you’ll never really know until the next test. Cancer sucks! I’m so glad you had a great outcome!

Local health care provider here! This is a great article for those who have cervixes (not all of whom may identify as women) to familiarize themselves with the pap/colposcopy experience! It’s also a great moment to remind all women that are eligible and able to please get vaccinated for HPV! While paps are a necessity and colposcopies are mostly benign procedures to make sure you don’t have a pre-cancer or cancer that needs further treatment, the best prevention against cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions is the HPV vaccine! Ask your GP’s and OB/Gyn’s about getting the vaccine when you can.

we have all done it, we have all gone through the experience, but we never talk about it. Why?
Also why aren’t we more educated about this subject? it makes me angry. We talk about safe sex, or the notion of if, we talk about sex experiences, but something that relates to ALL women, we don’t. We need to start changing.

Pulled up Wit and Delight as I was in the waiting room for my own colposcopy. It was my third so I knew what to expect, but I hadn’t had one in a few years. My younger self would have so appreciated seeing this! I remember the fear I was in and how alone I felt when I got all of the news about my abnormal Pap smear. And even now, years later waiting for my appointment, I can still relate to the feelings you had. Thank you so much for sharing!
