It’s so easy to do, Ruth, and the beating-ourselves-up is also easy to do. Thank you for such an honest comment. Amy

Tepita – That is exciting, the feeling that this could be the one! You’re so much more aware than I was when I was feeling the same way. 🙂 Amy

Isabel – The blame game is so easy to fall into, no? I love your point about taking responsibility. It’s hard but ultimately the only way I’ve found out of any mess. 🙂 Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. Amy

Nathalie – It’s such a fine line between being an individual and also being present and active in our relationships. Your writing is lovely. I love that we can all share our stories. Amy

Michaela – compromise…sometimes such a dirty word. 🙂 I recently read the book Never Split the Difference, and the author (an FBI negotiator) talks about the downside to compromise. Your comment reminds me of his words. 🙂 Amy

I’m a new wife and mother and I’ve spent a lot of time being so wrapped up in my roles that my relationship actually started to suffer.

Because I wasn’t taking the time to do things for myself, I did start playing that blame game with my husband. But once I started taking responsibility and creating my own life within the one I was living, I suddenly started finding joy in every aspect of my life.

I think this post is important for people in any step of a relationship. Being an individual within a couple is so important.

And I wasn’t wrong!

I’ve been a mother for 14 months now and I started to notice the same thing, in fact I wrote about it in my last article (5 things I learned since becoming a parent): My feeling of purpose got less individualistic, and I felt that was a very nice change. But I did start to feel less like an individual.

I am trying to be aware of this to make sure I keep in touch with the enterprising, exciting woman that often gets shadowed by my role as mother – no matter how much I enjoy the latter.

This article really made me feel the problem I was sensing isn’t mine alone and I’m happy you shared your story! Thank you for inspiring me, and probably tons of other people.

PS: What a beautiful portrait!

I’d love to find myself again!

I think losing sight of ourselves can happen not just in relationships, but because of careers, school — there are so many tempting places to stake our identity other than in ourselves! Thanks for a such a lovely and lucid essay xo

Thank you! This resonates with so many of us! As women, we have to love ourselves as deeply as we love others. Anything else is a disservice. This post has struck a cord down in my soul. Ladies, let’s remember who we are. We can be anything and many things. But we must remain true to ourselves! Let the introspection begin….

I can totally relate to your experiences.
For months I’ve been struggling with myself, wanted to cry all the time and wasn’t happy. My friends started worrying as they couldn’t recognize me. And I found the answer.
I’m in a relationship for three years now and have slowly adapted to a point where I lost by friends by not keeping in touch and trying to please my bf. I stopped spending time doing things I loved like doing music, painting and being creative. I gained weight, didn’t do any sports combined with a job change including lots of stress.
Now I’ve recognized what went wrong and am trying to focus on myself and the things that don’t take my energy but make me happy.
I’m glad you took your chances and fell much better and like yourself again 🙂

This is such a timely piece. x

I’m almost into 1 year with my boyfriend and for the first time I feel like this could be the one. But at the same time we both struggle because he travels a lot for work and is quite insecure while I worry, just like you, that I might change myself for him without noticing… And I don’t want to do that. But on the other hand we got this far and I’m not one for giving up 🙂

In the last year I discovered that I, too, had lost myself and molded myself into someone very agreeable, but without opinions of her own. I’m still trying to work through this and honor myself, but it’s been challenging. Thank you for sharing your story. It made me feel less alone. Sending love your way.
