Ann Marie,

We are sorry to hear you are disappointed with the content. Our intent was to learn more about what Ramadan is first-hand, not to politicize Islam. This site is first and foremost about designing a life well lived and we believe learning more about the world around us helps broaden our understanding of each other, both here and around the world.

Our best,

Team W&D

My best friend grew up in Iran and lived through the Islamic revolution. She is terrified when she sees a hijab because she knows what it means. Hijabs are the biggest symbol of oppression of women in the world. She is lucky to live in the United States now and is becoming a citizen. We do not want that oppression of women in this country. Stop trying to normal this lunacy.

This post has nothing to do with interior design and is all about pushing Islam on America.

Too bad – looked like a good blog… you just lost a reader. You should skip the politics and just focus on design.

I was hellbent on not making an ignorant American out of myself, exposing my little knowledge or understanding of Ramadan and Islam to my boyfriend’s family. thank so much

Happy Ramadan, Laila! I’m glad you enjoyed this post and thank you for your kind, kind words! This drink is great either hot or iced, but my Egyptian family goes nuts for it during Ramadan and they made me a jug of it that’s in our fridge as I type! It’s delicious. Does your family have any fun traditions or recipes for Ramadan?

As a muslim woman I feel so happy to see this post in sucha great website. I have loved and admired the work of the W&D team for such a long time that seeing that they care to put put this out for people to understand more is a beautiful action, especially in a time like this. And I also enjoyed your words Ashley, believing you aren’t muslim is a thoughfull detail that you put the effort, at that time, to learn for the occasion, and at this time, to inform all. A good article for those who know nothing about Ramadan, you got the important facts right!

I will have to try that drink!

Thanks, Aisha, for your thoughtful and valuable contributions! These are all great things to note. And, yes! I am loving the wider acceptance and emphasis on mental and physical wellbeing! Have you seen the cute cartoons circulating the Internet?

You did a great job providing an overview and I’ll be forwarding this to non-Muslim friends. I would add that Ramadan is a time to reflect and practice forgiveness and humility (I remind myself to quit being petty!). As you mentioned, there are exemptions for fasting and I appreciate that recently there has been greater emphasis on mental and physical well-being (if fasting will cause harm, don’t do it!). Muslims may not be fasting for a variety of reasons, so as a rule of thumb, it’s best to refrain from asking someone why they are not fasting. It may be personal and something the individual is not comfortable discussing. Ramadan is a wonderful time to witness the diversity of Islam, from the food served at iftar to the clothes worn at Eid celebrations.
